Helmet Comfort Report 2026

A certified helmet that is not worn protects no one. Nearly 63% of women riders report problems with fit or comfort.

Helmet policy in India is built around a single question: is she wearing one? The survey suggests a second question is equally decisive: can she stand to? Certification governs what a helmet does in the instant of an impact. It says nothing about the thirty minutes before it — the heat, the pressure points, the weight on the neck in stopped traffic, the hair that must be flattened or undone.

Fit is not a comfort complaint. It is a safety variable. A helmet that sits loosely moves on impact; a helmet that pinches is removed on short trips, worn unfastened, or replaced with nothing at all. Every fit failure is therefore a compliance failure waiting to happen — and it is concentrated among users whose head shapes and hair volumes were not represented when the product was designed.

Nearly two-thirds of women riders are using safety equipment that does not fit them properly. The product is certified; the user is not accommodated.

One qualification makes the figure heavier rather than lighter. Sixty per cent of this sample is drawn from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala, where helmet compliance is markedly higher than the national picture. The 62.9% was measured among women who largely do wear helmets — which is precisely the group whose fit problems would be least severe if compliance and comfort moved together. They do not.

What a women-first helmet changes

The gap is not exotic engineering. It is a set of design assumptions carried forward from a user base that was predominantly male, each of which can be revisited without compromising certification.

Compliance is not a matter of persuasion. It is a matter of fit.

What surprised us
  1. Certification and fit are unrelated

    A helmet can pass every impact test and still fail the user, because no standard measures whether it will be worn for thirty minutes.

  2. Hair is a design variable

    Hair volume alters internal fit and, in the pillion data, is a stated reason for not wearing a helmet at all — 43.9% report it.

  3. Discomfort is near-majority, not marginal

    At 62.9%, poor fit is the ordinary experience of women riders rather than the complaint of a minority.

The preceding chapter established that fit is the dominant product failure reported by women riders. This chapter sets out what correcting it involves. None of it requires a new safety standard. All of it requires a different set of measurements at the start of the design process.

Protective equipment is dimensioned from anthropometric data. Where that data under-represents women — in head circumference, head shape, neck strength and the volume added by tied or long hair — the resulting product will fit the majority of its intended users imperfectly and a minority of them well. The corrections are specific and testable.

The design brief, stated plainly

Each figure above corresponds to a decision that is currently made by default. Sizing tables are inherited. Padding is specified without reference to hair. Ventilation is designed for a temperate average rather than an Indian summer. Weight is treated as a manufacturing constraint rather than an ergonomic one. Restating these as explicit design questions is most of the work.

What it meansAnthropometric research on Indian women is the prerequisite for the next generation of protective equipment — and it does not currently exist at scale.
